Maine Maritime Academy sophomore Rachel Melampy was selected as the 2019 NAC Women's Volleyball Player of the Year, while her teammate Sydney Adamswas selected as the 2019 Senior Scholar Athlete. Northern Vermont University-Johnson first-year Porsche Johnson collected Rookie of the Year honors and her coach, Keven John, was chosen as the Coach of the Year. SUNY Canton Senior Jenna Roat was named the Defensive Player of the Year.
In addition to the major conference awards, 14 student athletes were named to the All-Conference First and Second Teams, and seven players were selected to the Sportsmanship Team. The NAC Women's Volleyball Sportsmanship Team is reserved for those who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The honorees positively affect the women's volleyball culture and match environment by clearly demonstrating sportsmanship and integrity beyond the sport playing rules and etiquette.
The 2019 NAC Women's Volleyball Championship tournament is this weekend at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine. Semifinal games between #1 Maine Maritime and #4 SUNY Delhi, and #2 SUNY Canton and #3 Northern Vermont-Johnson, are Saturday, November 9th. The championship game will be Sunday, November 10. Player of the Year
Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Massachusetts) - Maine Maritime Academy
Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass.) is the 2019 North Atlantic Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Year. Melampy, the 2018 NAC Rookie of the Year, tallied 51 kills in six NAC matches for a league-leading 3.00 kills-per-set average. Across 17 NAC sets, Melampy racked up 125 attacks, 30 digs (1.76 d/s), six service aces (0.35 sa/s), and three total blocks (0.18 b/s). She is credited with 59 points in NAC matches, an average of 3.5 points per set. In all 22 matches for the Mariners this season, she is credited with 262 kills, or 3.85 kills-per-set, and led the conference in both categories. Melampy scored a league-topping 297.5 points, or 4.4 points-per-set. A First Team All-Conference outside hitter, she was selected as the NAC Player of the week four times this fall (9/2-9/8, 9/9-9/15, 9/30-10/6, 10/14-10/20) for her consistently impressive stat sheets.
Defensive Player of the Year
Jenna Roat (Penfield, New York) - SUNY Canton
SUNY Canton senior libero Jenna Roat is the 2019 North Atlantic Conference Womens' Volleyball Defensive Player of the Year. Roat is a five-time recipient of NAC Defensive Player of the Week honors (9/9-9/15, 9/16-9/22, 9/30-10/6, 10/7-10/13, 10/21-10/27) and led the conference with 72 digs in six NAC matches for an average of 4.24 digs-per-set. Playing in 17 NAC sets, Roat also tallied 11 points, 10 assists (0.59 a/s), seven service aces (0.41 da/s), and four kills (0.24 k/s). In all 28 matches for the Roos, Roat scooped a whopping 428 digs, or 4.51 digs-per-set, both league-leading numbers. In 95 sets overall, she also notched 29 kills (0.31 k/s), 42 assists (0.44 a/s), 49 service aces (0.52 sa/s), and 78 points for the Roos. Roat is also a First Team All-Conference selection.
Rookie of the Year
Porsche Johnson (Dallas, Texas) - Northern Vermont University-Johnson
First-year Porsche Johnson (Dallas, Texas) is the 2019 North Atlantic Conference Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Year. Johnson was selected twice as the Rookie of the Week (9/16-9/22, 9/30-10/6) for her impressive performance. She appeared in all six NAC matches (19 sets) for the Badgers, and contributed to the team both offensively and defensively. Johnson tallied 51.5 points (2.7 p/s), 30 kills (1.58 k/s), 16 service aces (0.84 sa/s), 15 digs (0.79 d/s), and eight total blocks (.42 b/s). Her three solo blocks topped the conference, and she is among the top-ten leaders in blocks-per-set, service aces, and service aces-per-set. Johnson was also selected to the Second Team All-Conference.
Senior Scholar Athlete
Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Connecticut) - Maine Maritime Academy
Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) is the 2019 North Atlantic Conference Women's Volleyball Senior Scholar Athlete. Adams is a Marine Science major carrying a 3.63 grade point average as a two-sport athlete, also excelling on the women's lacrosse team. Adams was named a Scheel Scholar this fall, the highest academic honor bestowed at Maine Maritime Academy. She shares her passions for volleyball and marine science with local youth in a variety of ways, including leading the Mariners' VolleyKids program, and volunteering with the Ocean Studies department to promote science and marine health to elementary school children. Adams also volunteers with Special Olympics events on campus, is a member of the Title IX Advisory Board, and is a peer tutor. On the court, she led the conference with 8.63 assists-per-set, and had the second-most assists with 138 over only 16 sets. Her unselfish play led her to exceed 3000 career assists earlier this season. Adams ranks sixth in service aces (16) and fifth in service aces-per-set (1.0). She also tallied 20 kills (1.25 k/s), 18 digs (1.13 d/s), seven blocks (0.44 b/s), and hit .277 in conference matches. Adams is credited with an astonishing 714 assists (9.95 a/s) across all 24 matches for the Mariners this fall. She received Player of the Week honors twice (8/26-9/1, 10/28 - 11/3) and is also a First Team All-Conference selection.
Coach of the Year
Keven John - Northern Vermont University-Johnson
Keven John of Northern Vermont University-Johnson is the 2019 North Atlantic Conference Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year. In just his second year with the Badgers, John led the team to their first NAC postseason berth and the most wins in program history. The Badgers head into the NAC Championship tournament this weekend with the #3 seed and a record of 13-11 (4-2 NAC). Coach John placed three players on the All-Conference teams (one First Team, two Second Team), and developed the 2019 NAC Rookie of the Year, Porsche Johnson. The Badgers tallied 174 kills (9.16 k/s), 161 assists (8.47 a/s), 93 service aces (4.89 sa/s), 204 digs (10.74 d/s), and 16 total blocks (0.84 b/s) across six conference matches.
