Volleyball Picks Up First Win of the Season in Sunny California

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Husson women's volleyball team closed out 2019 Slugfest by splitting the day between a sweep of Mills College for their first win of the season, before being swept by UC Santa Cruz.

Husson 3 - Mills 0 (25-19, 30-28, 25-16)

The Eagles boasted two come-from-behind victories in the first two sets against the Cyclones as they were able to regain composure and work together as a team to climb to success. In the first set, Husson was down 19-18 before rattling off six consecutive points to help win the set. In the second set, the Eagles fought off four set points before winning the final three points to overcome Mills and take the set, 30-28. In the third set, the Eagles established their dominance earlier on the court as they captured the win with confidence.

Mary Grace Power led the attack for the Eagles with a career-high 17 kills while Kayli Doten pitched in five including the set-ending kill in the first set. Hanna Hembrow put up 34 assists and two service aces while Amber Lemay also had a pair of aces. Cat Torres made a great appearance as a rookie, scooping up 16 digs.

Jordyn Windom posted seven kills for the Cyclones while Aurora Gaines had all of her team's 25 assists. Augustine Neininger helped out with three service aces.

UC Santa Cruz 3 - Husson 0 (25-5, 25-12, 25-12)

For Husson, Cheyenne Young had three kills and two digs while Hembrow set up five assists and three digs. Torres helped grab five digs with Haley Andrews dig four balls. 

For UC Santa Cruz, Claire Okerlund had ten kills and four service aces while Alexandria Everett shot over nine kills and three service aces. Gio Martins grabbed eight digs and Cassie Nickel helped grab a few more easy points with four service aces. 

The Eagles will trek back across the country to Maine as they welcome multiple teams to Newman Gym for the 1st Annual Husson Eagles Classic starting on Friday, September 6th. On day one of the tournament, the Eagles will host the Cardinals of Plattsburgh State at 6 p.m. then will take on fellow in-state rival Bates College at 8 p.m.
