BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University volleyball team (0-4) hosted University of Maine-Fort Kent (5-2) for a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at Newman Gymnasium. Dropping the first match, 3-0, the Eagles bounced back taking the Bengals into five sets in the following match before falling behind, 3-2.
UMaine-Fort Kent 3 – Husson 0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-10)
The Bengals were led by a 10-kill effort from junior Luse Lumas. Teammates, freshman Erika Gutierrez and junior Rachel Nance, pitched in seven additional kills apiece. Freshman Beatriz Garrido displayed a strong presence on the court offensively accumulating 27 assists and seven aces to help lead the attack. Defensively, juniors Ashlyn Ferriera and Marisol Kirkendall recorded 15 digs.
Husson was led by upperclassmen, junior Mary Grace Power with nine kills and senior Kate Woods adding on eight kills and seven digs. Helping advance the attack, junior Hanna Hembrow put up 14 assists plus six digs. Junior Delaney Chisholm tallied a match-high 20 digs.
UMaine-Fort Kent 3 – Husson 2 (25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-10)
The Eagles nearly overtook the Bengals in the first set, but continued to ride that momentum into the following two sets to take the 2-1 lead in the match before falling behind in points in the final two sets.
Junior Riley Mooers stood out in the second match, hitting .415, she recorded a high of the day with 20 kills and 10 digs. Hembrow bounced around dishing out 25 assists, 21 digs, and four blocks as she hit .462. Using her height, sophomore Kayli Doten also posted four blocks, in addition to assisting two blocks and smacking down 11 kills. Freshman Adrienne Beatty was all over the court, digging 36 balls.
UMaine-Fort Kent's juniors continued to shine on the court leading their team with Lumas tallying a whopping 18 kills, Lopez accumulated 13 kills and 28 digs, Nance earned 12 kills and three blocks, while Kirkendall smashed seven aces.
Husson women's volleyball will have a couple days to recoup before hosting University of Maine-Machias on Tuesday night, September 11th at 6:30 pm.
