Cambridge, Mass. - The Husson University women's outdoor track and field team sent four athletes to the 2012 New England Division III Championships this weekend, the first regional championship for the Eagles in their inaugural season.
The leader on the day for Husson was Sarah LaPlante (Wallingford, Conn.), who competed in the javelin, finishing fourth in the event with a throw of 39.49m. With this performance, LaPlante qualifies for the Open New England Championships on Friday, competing against athletes from DI, DII and DIII in one event. She also qualifies for the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships May 17th - 19th in Troy, N.Y. A top eight finish at the ECAC championships, or an increase of .75m (the 34.49m throw puts her in the top 30 in the nation) would give her a virtual lock to attend the Division III National Championship event in Claremont, Calif.
Other Eagles who competed in the event included senior thrower Alex Barner (Woodstock, Conn.), Breanna Harlow (New Gloucester, Maine) in the high-jump, and Diana Kruszewski (Auburn, Maine) who usually competes in the heptathlon, qualifying in the javelin. Barner took 10th in the shot put with a throw of 11.15m, and came in 22nd in the javelin with a throw of 32.29m. Kruszewski turned in a personal record in the javelin with a throw of 32.45m, good enough for a top 20 finish.
