Women's Tennis Falls to SUNY New Paltz in NCAA First Round

FALMOUTH, Maine - The 2018 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Champion, Husson University, fell to SUNY New Paltz in a first round match of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis National Championship held at Foreside Racquet & Fitness. Originally located on the campus of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, the match was moved indoors due to inclement weather.

Husson No. 1 doubles partners Hannah Malinen and Natalie Tilton lost to the New Paltz duo of Trinity Chow and Laura Koob, 8-1. Eagles' Ashley Matlock and Nicci Munroe fell to New Paltz No. 2 Victoria Zezula and Lindsay Haley; and Eagles' Marisa Brown and Jocelyn Bell dropped the No. 3 doubles match to Jenna Grandville and Courtney Koran. The final score was 8-0 in both second and third doubles.

In the first singles match to finish, Trinity Clow defeated Ashley Matlock in the No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 4 match finished next, sealing the New Paltz victory with the fifth win of the match, when Jenna Grandville defeated Julia O'Leary, 6-0, 6-0.

Husson's No. 3 player, Hannah Malinen, was ahead 1-0 in the second set when the match concluded.

Husson's season comes to a close with a 10-2 record.

SUNY New Paltz moves to 18-1 on the season and advances to the second round against MIT (16-3) tomorrow. Nichols beat Colby-Sawyer, 5-4, in the first match of the day, and will face Bowdoin (14-5) in round two. The teams that emerge from the second round will compete for the opportunity to advance to the Quarterfinals on May 20. Kalamazoo College will host the team championships final rounds, which will be held May 20-22 at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
