BANGOR, Maine – Capturing their sixth straight victory, the Husson women's tennis team broke the program record for the longest winning and undefeated streak by taking down the University of Southern Maine, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon at Bangor High School.
Husson continued to show consistency in doubles action, going 3-0, but the Huskies put up a strong competition as the pairs, Meridith Blessard and Ashley Matlock, and Natalie Tilton and Hannah Malinen barely separated themselves from Huskies Samantha Harden and Elisa Harvey, and Denae Walton and Ashley Owens, 8-6. Finishing out doubles play, Jocelyn Bell and Marisa Brown downed Margaret Smith and Joanna Scheidegger.
With Blessard's 6-2, 6-1, win in singles competition, the senior earned her 17th career single win surpassing Sarah Smith for the most in program history. She also became the winningest Eagle in HU history with 38 career total victories to once again pass Smith's all-time mark of 37.
Julia O'Leary (6-4, 6-0) and Nicci Munroe (6-1, 6-2) defeated Smith and Scheidegger in two sets while Tilton and Malinen made impressive comebacks after falling behind in the first set, to then go on and win the following two sets. Harden earned the lone point for the Huskies, taking down Matlock, 6-1, 6-0.
The women have one more weekend of competition as they make the trek to Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Saturday, September 29th and Northern Vermont-Johnson on Sunday with matches commencing at 10 a.m. both days.
