STANDISH, Maine – Husson University (0-1-0) fell to Saint Joseph's College of Maine (1-0-1), 3-0, in a non-conference women's soccer contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Eagles and the Monks played to a 0-0 stalemate until the 56th minute when Saint Joseph's Madeline Wood steered a shot taken from the top of the box into the right side of the net.
Trailing 1-0 with 38 minutes left on the second-half clock, Husson nearly knotted the score when they broke free with an odd-woman rush in their offensive end. The Monks' keeper Adia Grogan left her post to challenge outside the box and the ball wound up on the foot of Shannon Dowd, who missed a wide open net with a shot that clanged off the crossbar.
Saint Joseph's used the momentum gained from the Eagle miss to register a pair of tallies in a matter of 90 seconds during the closing minutes of the contest, when Kayley Mattos scored with a nifty deflection into the bottom left corner off an Ashley Emery pass at the 86:17 mark.
Just over a minute later, Madison Michaud netted the final tally of the game with a dart just under the crossbar and beyond the extended arms of Husson keeper Shie Smith. Mattos was credited with an assist on the play.
