Eagles Drop One on the Road to USM, 17-2

GORHAM, Maine -- The Husson University women's lacrosse team fell to The University of Southern Maine on the road 17-2 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Sophomore Amanda Deshaies (Wells, Maine) had a goal and an assist for the Eagles to go along with a strong all-around game.  Senior Theresa Butler (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) scored the other Eagle goal. Junior goalie Kaitlin Dolloff (Richmond, R.I./Chariho) played an outstanding game despite the score making 20 saves.

For the Huskies, juniors Sam Campobasso (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Lauren Lessard (Lewiston, Maine/Kents Hill) paced the offense as each contributed four goals and an assist.  Senior Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.) added three goals and an assist.  Six other players chipped in with one goal.  Senior goalie Caley Presby (Portland, Maine/Deering) stopped five shots to record her first win of the season.

The Huskies rolled up a 49-17 advantage in shots attempted and won the battle for ground balls 34-17.  Lessard and rookie Hannah LaSalle (Humarock, Mass./Marshfield) paced the Huskies with seven and six ground balls respectively, and LaSalle led all players with five draw controls.

Deshaies was one of three Husson players to collect three ground balls, and she picked off a team-high three draw controls.

USM jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening nine minutes on goals by junior Heather Everett (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic), rookie Kenzie Kidder (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) and Lessard before Butler took a feed from Deshaies and best Presby to put Husson on the board.

After nearly seven minutes of scoreless play, the Huskies went on a 6-0 run over the final 13:54 to close the first half ahead 9-1.  Pelligrinelli scored three goals during the surge.

The Huskies kept up the offense in the second half as Lessard found the net three times in the opening 10 minutes to push the margin to 12-1. Campobasso tacked up two man-up goals before Deshaies snapped the string of 11 consecutive USM goals with 12:30 remaining.

Southern Maine will play Saint Joseph's College (Me.) on Wednesday (6:00 p.m.) at Memorial Field in Portland.  Husson is off until March 20 when it travels to Daniel Webster College.
