CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans scored 12 consecutive goals in the first half to put the game away as they advanced to their fourth straight North Atlantic Conference Championship game with an 18-5 victory over Husson on Wednesday at Spartan Stadium.
Castleton left no doubt as they outshot the Eagles 33-18, including a 23-5 advantage in the first half. The Spartans also recorded 19 caused turnovers as they won their 14th straight game to improve to 15-2. Husson recorded 15 caused turnovers and had 15 draw controls as its season ended at 8-6.
Junior Brianna MacKay had an impressive all-around game with five goals, two assists, four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Kate Auer added four goals, one assist and five draw controls while Maddy DaCosta contributed one goal, one assist, six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Meghan Els was impressive in net, making 12 saves and causing two turnovers to secure the victory.
Senior Michaela Bicknell led Husson with two goals, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Anna Wolterbeek added three caused turnovers and three ground balls while Rashell Saucier finished with five caused turnovers and five draw controls.
Chantel Wilken put Castleton on the board just 50 seconds into the contest, but Abi Staab countered with a goal 31 seconds later to tie it up 1-1. DaCosta gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead at 28:39, though Bicknell evened the score at two apiece with 27:11 left. Castleton responded with goals from the Brandi Whittemore, Lesure and Auer to extend the lead to 5-2 and force a Husson timeout with 16:34 remaining.
Out of the stoppage, Whittemore scored back-to-back goals in less than three minutes and then MacKay registered consecutive scores to stretch the lead to 9-2. Auer contributed three more goals in the final 8:03 of the half and MacKay scored two more a 14-2 advantage at the break.
In the second half Mattie Russell scored at 16:16 to cut the deficit to 14-3. However, MacKay made it a 12-goal game just one minute later. Castleton outscored Husson 3-2 over the final 20 minutes to secure the 18-5 victory.
Husson's Kaitlin Dolloff was saddled with the loss, as she made eight saves while also picking up two ground balls.
Castleton returns to action this weekend when the team plays in the NAC Championship against Thomas.
