CASTINE, ME – Abi Staab scored four goals to lead the Husson University women's lacrosse team to a 18-4 win over Maine Maritime on Tuesday night. Mattie Russell and Amanda Deshaies each had three goals and one assist for Husson. The Eagles improve to 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the North Atlantic Conference, while the Mariners of Maine Maritime fall to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in NAC play.
Husson came out strong and built an early 5-0 lead just ten minutes into the game. Thanks to two goals coming off the stick of Alissa Fallon, and one goal from Rashell Saucier, Abi Staab, and Anna Wolterbeek.
Maine Maritime would find the back of the net for the first time with 17:28 remaining in the first half when Ally Fuehrer would be Husson's goalie Abby Greenleaf. Husson would answer with four-straight goals coming from Mattie Russell on a free position shot and then three in a row from Staab. Maine Maritime would try their best to stop the Eagles scoring attack when Ally Fuehrer, second unassisted goal of the game made it 9-2 with 6:28 left in the first half. Husson's offensive would strike for three more goals before the half would end thanks to Russell's second of the game, and one goal apiece from Charlotte Gerhardy and Michaela Bicknell to give the Eagles a 12-2 lead going into the half.
The Eagles would score five unanswered goals from Bicknell, Russell, Rashell Saucier, and two goals from Deshaies to make it 17-2 with 15:25 left in the game.
Maine Maritime would find the back of the net in the second half with 13:42 remaining when Rachael Redles scored an unassisted woman up goal to make it 17-3. Husson and Maine Maritime would trade goals to end the game, the first coming from Deshaies and then Taylor O'Malley would score the final goal of the contest making it 18-4 Husson.
Abby Greenleaf and Jess Poulin combined to make seven saves in net. Greenleaf made two saves in the first half while Poulin made 5 saves in the second half.
The Eagles outshot the Mariners 38-16 and was edge out by Maine Maritime in ground balls 33-22.
Ashlee Knight stopped nine shots in net for the Mariners.
Husson will look to get above .500 when they play USM at home on Thursday at 5p.m.
