Donovan Scores Game-Winner as Eagles Edge Mariners, 52-49

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team (17-8, 14-0 NAC) pulled off an exhilarating win over the visiting Maine Maritime Mariners (21-4, 12-2 NAC) at Newman Gymnasium on Tuesday night as Bailey Donovan scored the game-winner with five seconds remaining in the contest. With the victory, the Eagles wrap up North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play a perfect 14-0, the first time since 2010 and just the fifth time under head coach Kissy Walker, while remaining undefeated on their home court during the 2019-20 regular season.

An early defensive battle led to a low scoring first quarter as the Eagles were able to hold the Mariners to just nine points. Despite a strong defensive effort from the visitors, the green and gold put 13 points on the scoreboard, as Sydney Allen led all scorers in the first quarter with five points. The Mariners came out strong at the start of the second quarter, scoring eight unanswered points before a hard drive to the basket from junior Megan Peach cut the Mariners lead to two. Lauren Plissey pushed the visiting team ahead by four as the Eagles headed into the break down 21-17.

Both teams struggled to get into a scoring groove to open up the third quarter as defense continued to dominate. Peach delivered her first of two blocks on the night to keep the Eagles within three. Claire Felix gave the Mariners a five point cushion before a jumper from Donovan inside the paint cut the lead down to a basket. The Eagles would tie the game at 30 behind back-to-back baskets at the charity stripe from Peach and Donovan with 14 seconds to go in the third quarter.

The Eagles took an early fourth quarter lead behind a jumper from Donovan, before Maine Maritime's Morgan Boudreau sank a shot from downtown to put the visitors up by a point. Emma Alley sent a shot soaring from behind the arc as the green and gold regained the lead, as a three-pointer from Peach extended their lead with 7:05 to go. Samantha Mason tied the game for the Mariners, shooting 2-2 from the foul line. Sami Ireland connected with Donovan below the glass to give the Eagles a four-point cushion (46-41), but the Mariner's battled back and a three-pointer from Mason cut the Eagles' lead to one. The two teams once again found themselves in a deadlock, as Plissey tied the game from the charity stripe with 6.9 seconds on the clock. Only seconds later Vanessa Duarte found Donovan under the basket for what proved to be the winning shot as the green and gold took the 52-49 win over the Mariners.

  • Donovan recorded a game-high 21 points, adding 13 rebounds, two blocks and a steal in the victory.

  • Plissey led the Mariners in scoring, posting 17 points, 16 rebounds and three assists.

  • Peach chipped in 14 points, four boards and a pair of blocks.

  • Maine Maritime held the advantage in rebounds (43-41), and field goal shooting percentage (30.9%) compared to Husson (27.7%), as each team scored 14 points off the bench.
