Women's Basketball Tops Terriers on the Road, 63-47

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Husson University women's basketball team (12-6, 9-0 NAC) brought home a victory over the Thomas College Terriers (9-12, 7-3 NAC), 63-47, to remain undefeated in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon. 

IN THE ACTION:

Bailey Donovan put the Eagles on the board first as made an opening drive jumpshot. The Terriers were quick to respond when Karli Stubbs hit a shot from behind the arc to take a 3-2 lead in the first quarter. The back-and-forth action between the two teams continued as Stubbs made a quick lay-up to give the Terriers their largest lead of the game, 13-8, with 4:36 remaining in the opening quarter. Emma Alley scored a jumper inside the paint to bring the Eagles within one, before Vanessa Duarte sank a three-pointer to give the visitors a two point advantage at the 2:21 mark. Anna Piirainen evened the score with a jumper with 1:18 remaining, but a Duarte lay-up would put the green and gold back on top as they ended the first quarter up 22-17 over the home team. Nikki Bradstreet started off the second quarter for the Terriers with a shot from behind the arc to cut Husson's lead to two. Sydney Allen scored five unanswered points to give the green and gold a 27-20 advantage. With 1:26 remaining in the half, Allen sank a shot from downtown to put the Eagles ahead 34-26 heading into halftime. 

The Terriers came back from the locker room looking to cut into Husson's lead, as Brinkman scored five unanswered points of her own to bring the home team back within one. Sami Ireland hit a basket in the pain to give the Eagles a three point advantage, before a steal from Joan Overman spurred a three-point shot from Alley to take a 39-33 lead with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter. Duarte drove through traffic to make a lay-up, sending the green and gold into the final frame with a 45-37 lead over the Terriers. Donovan gave Husson their largest lead of the day (49-37) as she battled the Terriers defense for a lane to the basket. After Brinkman sank a shot from behind the arc to bring the home team within seven, Cassie Urso responded with a three-pointer of her own to give the Eagles a 12-point lead. With 38 seconds remaining, Overman recorded her career-high seventh steal which led to a quick jump-shot for the Eagles, sealing their 63-47 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Donovan scored a game-high 16 points, added seven boards, two assists and two blocks in the victory.

  • Overman recorded a career-high seven steals, seven rebounds, six points and dished out two helpers.

  • Brinkman led the Terriers with 15 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. 

  • Weaver added eight boards and six points in the loss.

  • Thomas held a 36-32 edge in rebounds, while Husson held a 42.6%-36.7% advantage in shooting from the floor.
