Eagles Battle to 47-38 Victory over Maine Maritime

BANGOR, Maine -The Husson University Eagles (8-6, 5-0 NAC) captured the fans' attention as they battled neck-and-neck with the Maine Maritime Mariners (9-4, 4-1 NAC) in Newman Gym up to the final minutes before capturing their fifth-straight North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory with a 47-38 win. 

1st Half:  

The Mariners opened up the game with a quick bucket from Emily Melick at the 8:06 mark of the first quarter. Husson then tied the game shortly after with a jump shot by Joan Overman. Both teams continued to trade scores, when Mariners' Melick gave her team the two-point lead, 6-4, with 3:14 left in the first quarter. 

Megan Peach started the scoring in the second quarter tying the game at six. Kenzie Worcester pushed Husson's lead to four with a nice drive drawing a foul with 3:53 left in the half. Moments later the Mariners found themselves behind by one point when Lauren Plissley got the and-one to bring the score to 13-12. The Eagles wasted no time recapturing their lead back to four points when Sydney Allen checked in and hit a big three. The Eagles' offense finished out the half strong as they claimed a nine-point lead going into halftime. 

2nd Half: 

Overman came out of the break hot for the Eagles as she pushed the lead to 13 with back-to-back baseline jumpers. Husson led 25-12 with 8:56 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Mariners'  Plissey tried to give her team a spark with a three of her own to drop the Eagles' lead to just 11. Maine Maritime closed out the quarter cutting Husson's lead to five at the line. The Eagles advanced into the 4th quarter with a 27-22 lead. 

Husson came out of the brief break with a 3-point shot from Allen to put the pressure on the Mariners. They responded with a quick two of their own by Alayne Felix. The teams went back-and-forth with huge 3-point shots. With 3:18 left in the game, Maine Maritime closed the Eagles' lead to a mere bucket with a timely shot from Megan McLean. Shortly after, Felix who went 1-2 from the charity stripe to cut the Eagles' lead to one. Worcester finished out the game with a 3-pointer just before the shot clock went off to give Husson the seven-point lead and pick up the 47-38 win. 


Overman recorded her first double-double in her career with ten points and ten rebounds.

Peach grabbed 11 boards, four blocks, and two steals.

Allen went 3-4 from beyond the arc and finished with nine points. 

Worcester held the game-high 12 points paired with six assists.


Felix led her team with ten points along with three assists.

Plissey finished the game with 11 rebounds paired with nine points while shooting 3-3 from the charity stripe.

McLean chipped in seven points.


The Husson Eagles are scheduled to play a non-conference game at the University of Southern Maine on Monday, January 14th at 6:00 p.m.
