Bangor, ME - Husson University softball team swept a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from the Beavers of University of Maine at Farmington on Wednesday afternoon at O' Keefe Field wining the first game, 11-0 in five innings, and the second one 6-1 as Kayla Merrill pitched 7.2 innings of no hit ball. With the two wins the Eagles approve their record to 3-1 in conference play and 14-8 overall and as the Beavers fell to 1-7 in conference play and 2-12 overall.
Game 1 Husson 11, UMF 0 - 5 innings:
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first when Casey Lopes hit a RBI single to right field scoring Kayla Merrill. Husson extend their lead to 4-0 on a three-run home run by Chelsea Brennan over the left field fence.
In the bottom of the second the Eagles added another run when K. Merrill drove a Emily Vitone pitch over the left fence that would make a dent on the scoreboard for her 12th career homerun, which moved her second all-time in program history.
In the bottom of the third, Husson would add six more runs to extend their lead to 11-0 behind a RBI single by Haley Spiers, a RBI double by Sami Schultz, a RBI single by Brianna Bires, a RBI single by Lyndsay Merrill, a RBI single to Shaniah Haskell and a walk to Shannon Graves.
K. Merrill pitched five innings of no-hit ball for her 7th win of season, walking two and striking out four. Vitone pitched 2.2 innings for the loss, allowing 11 earned runs on 14 hits with one strikeout.
Game 2 Husson 6, UMF 1:
In the second game of the day, The Eagles jumped out to a early lead when L. Merrill hit a perfect sacrifice bunt, squeezing in K. Merrill with the first run of the game.
UMaine-Farmington tied the game up on a RBI single by Katie Clark in the top 4th, but Husson would answer right back in the bottom of half of the inning when Spiers scored on throwing error after Nicole Andrade reached base on a fielder's choice and a RBI double to left centerfield by K. Merrill making the score 4-1.
Husson extend the game to 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Andrade and a passed ball.
Alannah Healy pitched four innings to pick up her 5th win of the season, allowing one earned run on three hits, one walk and four strikeouts. K. Merrill who entered the game in relief of Healy in the fifth inning earned the three inning save, her second of the season. Taking the loss was Courtney Fowler her second of the season, pitched six innings, allowing six runs but only two were earned on four hits, walking three and striking out one.
K. Merrill held UMaine-Farmington hitless for 12.2 innings this season until she gave up a double to Kennadi Grover with two outs in the top of seventh of game two.
Husson will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Castleton, Vermont for a NAC doubleheader with the Spartans of Castleton College. The Beavers will host University of Maine at Presque Isle for two games on Saturday.
