WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Husson University softball team split a double-header on Monday afternoon, beating Defiance 2-1 and falling to Simpson 4-2. Husson is now 2-2 on the season after the double-header while Defiance is 1-2 and Simpson is 14-0.
In game one against Defiance, Alannah Healy (Brockton, MA) pitched 7.0 innings scattering seven hits and allowing just one run to lead Husson to the win. Lyndsay Merrill (Bethel, ME) doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME) to break the 1-1 tie.
Husson tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Colpitts doubled home Lyndsay Merril after Defiance took the lead in the top of the first.
Lyndsay Merril and Colpitts each went 2-3 with a RBI while Haley Spiers (Rochester, NH) went 2-2.
In the second contest against Simpson, Colpitts knocked in a pair of runs with her first inning double, but after Simpson was able to tie the game in the second inning, Abbie VanFleet had a two-run triple in the bottom of the third that proved to be the difference for Simpson.
Kayla Merrill took the loss as she picthed 5.0 innings and gave up four earned runs. Kayla Merrill, Lyndsay Merrill and Allie Hill (Calais, ME) each had two hits for Husson.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday with a double-header against Illinois Wesleyan and St. Scholastica.
