Softball Sweeps a Pair of Games on Thursday

Winterhaven, FL – Husson softball defeated Westminster 7-5 and Staten Island 9-5, in Florida on Thursday afternoon to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Game 1 – Husson vs. Westminster (PA)

Husson was led by Allie Hill (Calais, ME), who went 2-4, driving in one run and scoring two runs. Hill tripled in the third inning and singled in the seventh inning.

The Eagles jumped on the board first in the top of the 2nd when Haley Spiers (Rochester, RI) singled to the short stop, scoring Breanna Martin (Oxford, ME) and Casey Lopes (New Bedford, MA).

Husson added three more runs in the top of the third. Hill tripled in the top of the third, scoring Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME). Then Lyndsay Merrill (Bethel, ME) singled, bringing home Hill, making it 5-0.

Westminster scored two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, closing the gap to 5-4, but Husson added two more runs in the top of the 7th to place the game just out of reach of the Titans.

Amanda Ryan (Brewer, ME) recorded the victory for the Eagles striking out three.

Game 2 – Husson vs. Staten Island

Sami Schultz (Hermon, ME) hit a three-run homerun, sparking the Eagles to a 9-5 victory in seven innings over Staten Island.

The game was scoreless until the fourth when Staten Island struck first on an RBI single by Tufano.

Husson came up big in the fourth, scoring five runs on three singles and a two-run triple by L. Merrill.

Staten Island closed the deficit to 5-2 with a lone run in the fifth, only to be matched by the Eagle's run on an RBI double by K. Merrill, making it 6-2.

The Dolphins scored three runs in the top of the 6th to close the gap to 6-5.

Husson answered back with their own 3-run 6th inning, on the bat of Schultz who hit a 3-run shot to make it 9-5.

The Eagles turned a double play in the top of the 7th, and Jess Poulin fielded a popup to clinch the 9-5 victory.

K. Merrill earned the win for Husson, striking out four and allowing no walks.

Husson will wrap up their play at the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow as they play Thomas More at 1:00 PM and Catholic at 3:00 PM.
