Eagles Can't Come Back Against Nor'Easters, Conclude 2012 Season

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of New England (27-13) plated seven runs in the second inning and never looked back, scoring an 11-8 elimination game victory over Husson (33-13) at the 2012 Amherst, Mass. Softball Regional Championship.

Kelly Reid '15 surrendered eight runs (four earned) in the complete game win, striking out six, without issuing a walk. Sophomore counterpart Becca McCarty allowed eight runs on eight hits in just two and two thirds innings to fall to 18-8 on the season.

Allie Frazier '14 went 3-for-5 for UNE, which saw seven different players drive in a run. Ashley Gott '12, Jessica Potter '14 and Maegen Johnson '12 each finished 3-for-4, while Amanda Vaudreuil '14 added a pair of hits. Heidi Shaw '15 led the Husson offense, driving in three runs, while Lona Sargent '13 went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Scoreless after one, UNE plated seven runs in the top of the second to jump out to an early lead. Megan Gauger '13 and Potter led off the frame with consecutive singles before a Husson error allowed the Nor'easters to plate the first run. A Kirstyn Tracey '14 base-hit to center then scored Potter before a Casey Brigham '13 grounder to third coupled with a pair of Eagle errors staked UNE to a 7-0 margin.

Hoping to kick-start a Husson rally, Aimee Mortensen '13 ripped a two-out single before Deb Colpitts '15 legged out an infield hit to put two on. Shaw then poked a ball into left to plate the Eagles' first run, before Sargent singled to left to cut it to 4-3. With runners on second and third, Brianna Webster '12 kept the rally going with an RBI single to left before Reid retired Victoria Overlock '15 on a foul-fly to end the inning.

With UNE tacking on runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, Husson looked to get something going in the bottom of the sixth, putting runners on the corners with one out. Looking to limit the damage, Reid got Shaw to hit a grounder to short, but a UNE error followed by another miscue in the outfield allowed both runs to score, cutting it to 10-6.

Down 11-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Husson pushed across a pair of runs, pulling within three on an Overlock double and a UNE error, but Reid quickly regrouped, striking out Nicole Sargent '12 and Ashley Smith '15 to end the game.
