Husson and Bates Trade 6-5 Victories in Lewiston

Lewiston, Maine - Bates and Husson split a softball doubleheader on Wednesday at Bates, with the visiting Eagles winning Game 1 by a 6-5 score and the host Bobcats returning the favor with their own 6-5 decision in Game 2.

Bates (17-10) sophomore Alayna Garbarino hit a towering fly ball that landed barely over the fence and just inside the left-field foul pole for a three-run home run in the first inning of Game 2, keying Bates' win in the nightcap. It was Garbarino's first career round-tripper, and it came after an RBI double by Leah Maciejewski for a 4-0 Bates lead.

Husson (29-10) scored one run in the second inning and evened the game at 4-4 with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by Nicky Sargent's two-run double to right-center.

Bates retook the lead in the fifth inning with a two-out rally, as Kelly McManus singled up the middle and came home on Lauren Dobish's double down the left-field line.

Bates lefthanded reliever Brenna Callahan came on to start the fifth inning in place of righthanded starter Kelsey Freedman and held Husson scoreless over her first two innings of work. But Husson tied the game again in the top of the seventh, using a leadoff single by Lona Sargent, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Hill, and Sargent stole third base. Brianna Webster then put on a squeeze bunt to score Sargent. Webster reached base safely on a throwing error on the play, but Victoria Overlock lined into a double play to prevent further damage.

Bates' Karen Ullmann drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh inning, then moved to second on a sac bunt by McManus and stole third base after Dobish was hit by a pitch. Maciejewski came up and hit a tailing liner out to left field that was misplayed, and Ullmann easily came home for the game-ending run.

Kody Lyon, who earned the save in Game 1, started Game 2 for Husson and accepted the loss, dropping to 11-3. Callahan got the win to move to 2-0.

Lona Sargent hit her first homer of the season in Game 1 for the Eagles, a two-run shot that gave Husson a 6-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Bates came back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI double by Garbarino and run-scoring singles by Kiely Webster and Libby King. Husson reliever Deb Colpitts got out of the jam without any further damage, and Kody Lyon pitched a scoreless seventh inning for her first save this season.

Starting pitcher Becca McCarty earned the win for Husson, going 5.1 innings and getting charged for five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks, moving her to 14-6 on the season.

Bates starter Kristen Finn dropped to 7-8, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk.

The Bobcats' 17th win represents the second-highest total in team history, trailing only the 18-13 club of 2001.

Husson will resume the North Atlantic Conference Tournament this weekend, beginning with a match-up against Thomas College at 10:00 am on Friday.
Bates plays at Bowdoin on Saturday to start a three-game NESCAC East series that the Bobcats need to sweep in order to reach postseason play. The regular season ends with a doubleheader against the Polar Bears on Sunday.
