Eagles Sweep Beavers to Close Out 2012 NAC Play

Farmington, Maine - The Husson University softball team swept the final North Atlantic Conference double header of the season, defeating the University of Maine at Farmington who finished its regular season today as the Eagles took wins of 2-1, 7-1 at Prescott Field. Husson (27-9, 15-1) and UMF (10-20 overall, 6-10 NAC) await the NAC postseason seedings with the quarterfinals scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

In the first game, Brianna Webster (Belfast, Maine) bunted home Lona Sargent (Sullivan, Maine) in the fifth inning as the Eagles eked out a 2-1 victory over UMF.

An RBI single by Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, Maine) gave Husson a 1-0 lead in the second, but Meaghan Donnell (Rochester, N.H.) tied the game at 1-1 with a run-scoring single in the home half of the frame.

Donnell was the lone repeat hitter in the game with a pair of singles, while Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) clubbed a double. Donnell and Mitchell were recognized prior to the game as the UMF seniors playing in their final regular-season home games at Prescott Field.

Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) gave up five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in the loss.

Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, Maine) threw seven innings in the win with four hits allowed, a base on balls and five strikeouts.


In game two, the Eagles scored five times in the fifth to pull away for the 7-1 win.

Heidi Shaw (Manchester, Maine) clubbed an RBI triple in the fifth with Lona Sargent and Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, Maine) each supplying a run-scoring single.

Christine Tovey (Sanford, Maine) singled twice for UMF, who scored their lone run on a Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Bartlett took the loss with eight hits allowed and two walks over five innings.

Lona Webster turned in three hits in the nightcap, while Nicole Sargent and Webster each singled twice.

McCarty went five innings for the win with four hits allowed and four strikeouts.

The Eagles continue the regular season on Wednesday when they travel to Bates to make up a pair of games which were originally scheduled to be played on March 27th. This will be the final tune-up for Husson before they set their sights on the post season.
