Husson Sweeps Softball Double Header at Maine Maritime

Castine, Maine – Husson University swept Maine Maritime in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at Ritchie Field Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles (23-8, 11-1 NAC) rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take the opener 10-6 in extra innings, before pouncing on the Mariners (12-14, 5-9 NAC) early in the first for a 6-1 win in the nightcap. Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, Maine) took the decision in both contests.

McCarty worked three-and-two-thirds in relief to capture the opener and went the distance in game two, striking out nine and scattering six hits to improve to 8-6. Ashley Smith (Ellsworth, Maine) and Lona Sargent (Sullivan, Maine) each went 5-for-8 on the twinbill. Sargent ripped three doubles, scored twice and drove in one run, while Smith had a pair of doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. Brianna Webster (Belfast, Maine), McCarty, and Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, Maine) each had three hits on the day. Webster drove in four runs and scored twice, while Sargent drove in a pair. McCarty helped her own causes with a run drive in and one run scored.

Erica Taylor (Mesquite, Texas) led the Mariners with a 4-for-7 afternoon, driving in a run. Andi Flannery (E. Machias, Maine) and Sabrina Keach (Chesterville, Maine) rapped out three hits apiece. Keach drove once run in, while Flannery scored once.

Maine Maritime led the opener 5-0 heading into the top of the sixth when Husson scored five runs on six hits and an error. Five different players picked up an RBI in the inning to knot it up. Husson blew the game open with five runs in the top of the eighth. Smith belted a two-RBI double into leftfield to plate the first two runs, enough to give Husson the cushion it needed.

Husson jumped on MMA early in the nightcap, posting four runs in the first. Webster did the bulk of the damage in one swing, clearing juiced bases with a double into the gap.

Husson returns to action on Friday when the Eagles host New England College in NAC action. Maine Maritime hosts Maine-Farmington on Friday.
