Bangor, ME - The Husson University softball team swept a mid-week non-conference double header over the visiting Nor'easters of the University of New England at O'Keefe Field on Wednesday. The Eagles held of a late rally to take game one by a score of 7-5, and took the second of the double dip 8-4. With the wins, the Eagles improve to 17-8 on the season, and are currently on a four-game win streak, while the Nor'Easters fall to 14-8 and see a five-game winning streak cut short.
In game one, the Nor'easters grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the first before Husson came back to establish a 5-2 lead. Senior firstbaseman Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, ME) was the catalyst for the Eagle first with a two run single.
Both pitchers steadies themselves through the middle innings, putting up matching zeroes on the board in the third, fourth and fifth. UNE cut the deficit to one in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by senior Maegen Johnson (Standish, ME), but Husson answered and was able to put the game out of reach in the home half on RBI singles Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME) and Heidi Shaw (Manchester, ME).
Leadoff hitter Courtney Hill (Calais, ME) finished with three of the Eagles' 11 hits, while L. Sargent added two and scored twice. Pitcher Kody Lyon (Dalton, NH) scattered eight hits to record the win, allowing five earned while striking out six.
UNE got their eight hits off the bats of eight different players but the stand out was junior Erin Grover (Biddeford, ME) who scored two of the Nor'easters' five runs. First year pitcher Kelly Reid (Nantuckett, MA) allowed 11 hits and six earned runs while fanning six batters despite earning her second loss in her last eight decisions.
In game two, Husson rallied from a 3-2 deficit, plating five runs in the bottom of the third on the way to an 8-4 win. First year third baseman Victoria Overlock (Belfast, ME) struck the key blow in the inning, belting a two-out, three RBI double.
Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, ME) got it done on both sides, joining Overlock, Shaw and Hill as the Eagles with multiple hits in the game, while also earning the win, allowing just two earned on seven hits while striking out four.
Senior Ashley Grott (Winterport, ME) and sophomore Ali Stanley (Rochester, NH) each had a pair of hits for the Nor'easters in game two, while senior pitcher Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, VT) allowed ten hits to suffer the loss - all four pitchers threw complete games on Wednesday.
Husson heads to Vermont for four North Atlantic Conference contests this weekend, meeting the Lyndon State Hornets for a double header beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday, and finishing the road trip with a pair at Johnson State on Sunday beginning at noon. The Nor'easters have a key set of Commonwealth Coast Conference double headers this weekend, traveling to Salve Regina on Saturday for a noon start, and stopping by Roger Williams for two beginning at 9:30 am.
