Bangor, ME - The Husson University softball team swept their home-opening double header with the visiting Mules of Colby College in non-conference action at O'Keefe Field. The Eagles won the first game 7-3, and followed that up with a 10-4 victory to improve to 7-5 on the season, while the Mules dropped to 2-9 with the losses.
In game one, Husson was led by pitcher Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, ME), who earned the win by throwing three innings in the circle, allowing just two runs on four hits and as many strikeouts, and did the job at the plate to help her cause going 1-1 with a pair of RBI. Centerfielder Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME) scored two runs out of the number nine spot going 2-3 at the dish, while catcher Heidi Shaw (Manchester, ME) scored a run while driving in another, going 1-3 in the game.
For the Mules, designated player Aimee Polimeno (Woodstock, NH) had a solid game at the plate, going 3-3 while scoring two runs. Lead-off hitter Meaghan Lewia (Wells, ME) went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Pitcher Lauren Becker (Falls Church, VA) was tagged with the loss, while reliever Megan Michie (Rhinebeck, NY) came in to throw two and two thirds innings allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Colby jumped out to an early lead as Lewia doubled to center field to lead off the game, and after a strikeout, moved to third on a passed ball. Katie Graichen (Arundel, ME) drove her in by hitting into a fielder's choice to light up the scoreboard for the Mules. Colby added another in the top of the second as first baseman Erin Caputo (Sayville, NY) ripped a two-out double to left and after a walk, came in on a Lewia single and the Mules led 2-0 after two.
The Eagles answered in the bottom of the third, when the rally started on a Victoria Overlock (Belfast, ME) single through the right side. Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, ME) kept it going with a single to right, and Husson loaded the bases on an Ashley Smith(Ellsworth, ME) single to left. McCarty stepped up and slapped a single to right that plated two. Brianna Webster (Belfast, ME) finished off the scoring with a single through the left side, and the Eagles took a 3-2 lead after three innings.
The Mules tied it up in the top of the fourth when Polimeno singled up the middle and moved to second on a passed ball. That set the table for Caputo who came through with a double to right, plating Polimeno and tying the score at 3 apiece.
Husson once again responded in the bottom of the inning when L. Sargent started things off with a double to left center. Slap-bunting right fielder Courtney Hill (Calais, ME) dropped one down and legged it out, and quickly stole second. With runners on second and third, Shaw singled to score L. Sargent and moved to second on the throw. After a failed squeeze attempt resulted in the first out of the inning, Overlock reached on an error that plated Shaw from second. N. Sargent singled up the middle, driving in Overlock and the Eagles pulled out to a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Husson added another, as L. Sargent reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on a Hill single. Chelsea Brennan (Woonsocket, RI) came in to pinch-hit, and put the ball in play to drive in Sargent, giving the Eagles a 7-3 lead that they would maintain to earn the game one victory.
Game two started after a half-hour break, and the Eagles were once again victorious in their second game at O'Keefe field this season.
The Eagles received another quality outing from Smith who went 2-3 in game two with an RBI and two runs scored. Webster had an identical line while starting at shortstop in game two, while Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME) went 2-3 with three RBI getting the game two start in left field. Pitcher Kody Lyon (Dalton, NH) went the distance to earn the complete game victory, pitching around 13 hits while striking out four.
For Colby, center fielder Lindsay Peterson (Fairfield, CT) went 2-4 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI, and third baseman Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, ON, CAN) chipped in with a pair of RBI of her own while going 1-4 at the dish. Starting pitcher Kelsey Yardumian (Boxborough, MA) received the loss, but once again Michie came in and threw solid relief, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out six in four innings of work.
The hot bats of Husson came out early in the second game as the Eagles moved six runs across in the bottom of the first. Hill started the inning with an infield single and moved to second on an errant pick-off attempt after a strikeout. After an Overlock walk and a single from Brennan loaded the bases, N. Sargent reached on a fielder's choice and a Colby error allowed Hill to score the first run of the game. Smith came to bat with the bags still full of Eagles, and hit a single to the second baseman that plated Overlock. Webster reached on a fielder's choice, but another Mule error allowed both N. Sargent and Brennan to come across. Merrill ripped a bases-clearing single up the middle, driving in Webster and Smith and Husson was on top 6-0 after one.
The Eagles added another in the bottom of the second when Shaw started the rally with a single through the right side. The speedy catcher stole second and was moved to third on a sac bunt. With Brennan at the plate, the ball got away from the Colby catcher and Shaw scored on the passed ball to make it 7-0 in favor of Husson.
In the top of the third, Colby started a comeback attempt as Allana Sanborn (Eliot, ME) got things started with a lead-off walk. After Lewis reached on a fielder's choice, Peterson drove her in with a double to left center. Graichen kept things going with a single to shortstop, setting the table for Wheeler who belted a two-RBI double to left center, making the score 7-3 in favor of the Eagles.
Husson answered in the bottom of the inning as Smith started the rally with a lead-off single to left center and quickly swiped second. Webster singled to third base, and a throwing error plated Smith and sent Webster to second. Merrill singled through the left side and Webster came all the way around to score to make it 9-3 Husson after three.
The Eagles added another in the bottom of the fourth when Overlock drew a lead-off walk. She was pinch-ran for by Haley Spiers (Rochester, NH) who wasted little time stealing second. Spiers came around to score on a pinch-hit RBI single by Kelsy Livermore (Kennebunk, ME) putting Husson in double digits with a 10-3 edge after four innings.
Colby would try to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth when Polimeno led things off with a single up the middle, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Carolyn Bennett (Scarborough, ME) drew a walk and a Sanborn single loaded the bases for the Mules. Lewia stepped up with the bases juiced and no outs, and ripped a single up the middle that scored Polimeno, but a strong throw from L. Sargent in center got Bennet out at the plate. A fly out and a ground out from Lyon got the Eagles out of a jam, and they would hold on for a 10-4 victory.
Husson is back in action at O'Keefe Field at 12:00 pm on Saturday when they begin North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a double header against Thomas College. Colby will travel to Castine, ME to take on Maine Maritime Academy for a double header on Sunday beginning at noon.
