Husson and Colby Exchange 2-1 Victories, Split Softball Double Header

WATERVILLE, ME --- In a doubleheader where the two teams combined for just six runs and 15 hits, the Husson University and Colby College softball teams each earned a win at Crafts Field on Tuesday in non-conference play.

Colby had just three hits in the first game, but came away with a pair of runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 2-1 victory. In the nightcap, the game was scoreless through seven innings and each team managed one run in the eighth. Husson received a towering triple from Amanda Gifford (Lee, Maine) in the top of the 10th inning to pull out a 2-1 victory.

The Eagles (13-13) went ahead 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning of the first game. Colby (6-14) had three errors in the inning and Lona Sargent (Sullivan, Maine) had an RBI single to bring in Gifford with the lone run.

Colby was helped when Husson committed its lone error of the game to allow Katie Graichen (Arudel, Maine) to reach base. After a sacrifice bunt by Lindsay Peterson (Fairfield, Conn.), Barbara Santos (Topsfield, Mass.) had an RBI single to score Graichen. With two outs in the inning, Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) smacked a double to bring in Santos for the eventual game-winning run.

Aimee Polimeno (North Woodstock, N.H.) allowed just three Husson hits and no earned runs, struck out two and walked none to earn the Colby win. Kody Lyon (Dalton, N.H.) allowed just one earned run for Husson while striking out three and walking none in five innings of work.

The pitchers were the story of game two, with both Colby's Lauren Becker (Falls Church, Va.) and Husson's Rebecca McCarty (Skowhegan, Maine) throwing shutouts through seven. In extra innings, a runner is placed at second base to start the inning. Becker had a no-hitter over seven innings of play only to allow four hits over the next three innings and lose a tough game. She finished with eight strikeouts and five walks. McCarty, meanwhile, gave up only three hits, had three strikeouts, and no walks.

Gifford had an RBI single to bring in Courtney Hill (Calais, Maine) in the top of the eighth, but Colby tied the game when Graichen's RBI single scored Kelsey Yardumian (Boxborough, Maine) in the bottom of the eighth.

With two outs in the 10th inning, Gifford ripped a triple to score Hill for the 2-1 Husson lead. The Mules had runners at first and third base in the bottom of the 10th, but could not push the tying run across home plate.
