WATERVILLE, Maine - The Husson men's cross country team saw two Eagles earn North Atlantic Conference All-Conference accolades this year, between Patrick Welch being named the 2019 Senuir Scholar Athlete and Joel Bond achieving a spot on the All-NAC First Team and Sportsmanship Team.
SUNY Delhi first-year student athlete Aiden Berlinski claimed both the 2019 NAC Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year and Runner of the Year awards. Maine Maritime Academy head coach Ryan King was voted the Coach of the Year.
In addition to the major conference awards, 15 men earned All-Conference honors with their performances at the 2019 NAC Men's Cross Country Championship, and nine men were selected to the Sportsmanship Team. The NAC Men's Cross Country Sportsmanship Team is reserved for those who distinguish themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The nine honorees positively affect the men's cross country environment, and clearly demonstrate sportsmanship and integrity beyond sport rules and etiquette.
Runner & Rookie of the Year
Aiden Berlinksi (Unionville, New York) - SUNY Delhi
SUNY Delhi first-year student athlete Aiden Berlinski is the 2019 Men's Cross Country Runner and Rookie of the Year for the North Atlantic Conference. Berlinski's debut with the Broncos was impressive, as he won the Dick Daymont 4K Season Opener with a time of 13:53.1. He was the second finisher for the Broncos, 29th place overall, at the SUNY Geneseo Mike Woods Invitational 8K which had more than 300 runners from over 25 teams compete. Berlinski won the Bronco Weekday Classic 5K in a time of 16:28.7 on October 8th. SUNY Delhi won the event with a perfect score of 15. Then at the Division I UAlbany Invitational on October 18, Berlinski established a new career-best 8K time of 26:09.9 - an improvement of 41 seconds. He finished in 14th place, helping the Broncos claim third place in the meet. Berlinski earned Rookie of the Week honors for each of the preceding performances (8/26 - 9/1, 9/23-9/29, 10/7-10/20). He won the 2019 NAC Championship 8K in 28:51.4 on a challenging course to claim both Rookie and Runner of the Year titles.
Senior Scholar Athlete
Patrick Welch (Hampden, Maine) - Husson
Patrick Welch (Hampden, Maine) has been a four-year member of the Husson University Men's Cross Country team. During that time, he has evolved as a role model for dedication to the sport, his team, and his studies. He maintained a 3.942 grade point average as an undergraduate student and currently holds a 4.0 in the Masters Program for Criminal Justice Administration with a certificate in Counter-Terrorism and Security. Welch has earned President's List or Dean's list honors every semester at Husson. He was also awarded the 2017-2018 Husson Cross Country Eagle Award, which is the top honor given to an athlete of outstanding integrity. Welch was a member of the 2018 NAC Sportsmanship Team as well as the 2017 and 2018 NAC All-Academic Teams. He achieved athletic and academic success at Husson despite working full time throughout his collegiate career.
Coach of the Year
Ryan King - Maine Maritime Academy
Maine Maritime Academy head cross country coach Ryan King earned his second-consecutive North Atlantic Conference Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year award. King's men claimed three of the top-15 times at the NAC Cross Country Championship in Lyndonville, Vermont last weekend, including third-place finisher John Hassett (Castine, Maine). The Mariner's finished in second place overall at the event. King's squad won the UMPI Invitational to start the season (August 31) and took that momentum into the NVU-Lyndon Championship Preview Invitational on September 7th, where the Mariners claimed the top spot among eight conference teams. Maine Maritime runners Hassett and Benjamin Butterfield (Phillips, Maine) earned NAC Runner and Rookie of the Week awards, respectively, this season.
