FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Husson University men's outdoor track and field team kicked off their inaugural season with an appearance in the Jim Sheehan Invitational hosted by Fitchburg State University on Saturday afternoon and finished in 5th overall out of 14 teams with 37 points, an excellent showing against teams that have had a history of varsity or club status.
Assumption won the invitational with 169 team points while Fitchburg State finished second with 168 points, UMaine-Farmington was third with 58 and Castleton finished with 51 points good for a 4th place and Husson rounded out the top five.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Jake Dobos who placed 7th in the 100 meter dash (11.80), 5th in the 200 meter dash (24.23), and tied for 7th in the high jump (1.60m). Dobos lead off the 4x100 relay team that featured Joe Wright, Miguel Caballero, and Nick Young finished 2nd overall surrounded by numerous veteran squads with a time of 45.68.
Andrew Balsamo finished 4th in the 1500M (4:21.23) and a member of the 5th place 4x400 relay team with Young, Jeff Love and Will Richard. Young ran to a 4th place finish in the 400 meter dash with a 55.13. Josh wheeler was close by in 8th with a 57.32.
Joe Minard took 8th in the shot put with a throw of 11.02 while Dominic Locke took 7th in the triple jump (11.64M) and Francesco Wright was 8th in the 110 meter hurdles (19.58) and 6th in the pole vault (3.05m).
"Each top Eagle performer set a school record for the university and as a whole, the men's team used their opportunity to the fullest," said head coach Kate Goupee. "All but one athlete was competing in their first college meet and all truly represented the university as well as any veteran team."
The Eagles return to track at the Bowdoin Invitational hosted by Bowdoin College on Saturday, April 9th.
