WENHAM, Mass. - Gordon College (4-7-1) scored two goals in a five minute span as they defeated the Husson University men's soccer team (3-10) by the final score of 3-1 at the Brigham Athletic Complex on Tuesday night in a non-conference fixture.
The Eagles had the first shot of the game thanks to Gerard Arias Huerta misfiring in the 3rd minute just wide of the net. The Scots responded with a strong counterattack, scoring the first goal of the match off of Luckson Dambo for his third goal of the season, giving Gordon the 1-0 lead heading into the interval.
In the 51st minute, Ben Mollenhauer attempted to curl a shot into the top corner past Ben Powell who jumped into action with a punch save to keep the Gordon lead at one. The lead didn't last much longer as the Eagles leveled the score in the 57th minute. Ben Shumway scored his second goal of the season on a half volley from the top of the box that snuck by Gordon's goalkeeper inside the right post.
The Scots regained the lead in the 76th minute as Luckson Dambo struck again followed by his teammate Julius Swaim Gordon smacking a hard volley into the back of the net to double the lead and give Gordon the 3-1 victory.
Comments from head coach Gavin Penny, "It's the same old story and it is becoming very frustrating. It's hard to put into words today's game. There were so many positives and we were organized, I thought we really did play well. We were competitive, challenged throughout, and used the ball well when we had it. However, we lost the game today because we made silly mistakes, the same mistakes we have made in previous games. We absolutely need to start learning where we are losing games and work harder to correct them. For as good as we are, and the talent that we have, we will not win games if we do not own our mistakes as a collective group and fix them. We also need to improve in front of goal. We simply can't win games if we don't shoot the ball. This weekend will be season defining for us."
Benjamin Powell made five saves in net for the Eagles while Brody Veleber came up with four stops for Gordon.
The Eagles had three corner kicks to Gordon's two, while Gordon outshot Husson, 14-7.
The Eagles will spend their fall break on the road in New York. On Saturday, October 12th, the Eagles will be at SUNY Canton for an 11 a.m. match while on Sunday, Husson will play at SUNY Delhi with a 12 p.m. start.
