WATERVILLE, Maine - Two goalies were awarded North Atlantic Conference (NAC) weekly awards for men's soccer this past week, splitting time in net. Kyle Townsend picked up Player of the Week for his second NAC award of the year and Benjamin Powell was awarded his first Rookie of the Week.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Kyle Townsend, Husson (Jr., GK - Hampden, Maine)
Townsend recorded his first career point in the opening minute of play against SUNY Canton, sending a free kick from just outside his goal box, sailing down the field over nearly every player's head before bouncing down just in front of teammate Nathan Firlings, giving the Eagles an early 1-0 advantage. Once again off the boot of Townsend, Husson extended their lead to 3-1 in the 39th minute, after teammate Ian Lee took control of a misplayed ball by Kangaroo defender, punted by Townsend. Husson returned home with a 4-1 victory and a win for the junior in net.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Benjamin Powell, Husson (Fr., GK - Frankfort, Maine)
Five minutes into the match against Bowdoin, Powell stopped not one, but two penalty kicks in net for the Eagles, because the first one had to be retaken. In his first collegiate start in net, he held off the Polar Bears from scoring throughout the entire first half, tallying eight saves in the match. In the Eagles first encounter with SUNY Canton since joining the conference, Powell helped Husson maintain a 4-1 victory finishing out the remaining 21:20 in net while picking up two saves.
