BANGOR, Maine – Husson University's longest-serving head men's lacrosse coach, Mike Craig, plans to part ways with the Eagles after leading the team for the past five years.
Craig's journey as an Eagle began in 2012 as a transfer from McDaniel College, competing for the Husson men's lacrosse team his senior season. He made such an impression in his single season as an Eagle, that he earned a spot on the coaching staff as a student assistant the following year. Craig took over the program in 2016 as the head coach, and has led his team to a 22-40 overall record in the past five years.
"We are sorry that Mike will be leaving us. He has worked hard to build our lacrosse program. His commitment to Husson has been exemplary. Our best wishes to him," remarks Director of Athletics Frank Pergolizzi.
Throughout his time at Husson, Coach Craig has seen 20 players earn post-season accolades from the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), including one NAC Defensive Player of the Year honor. He also coached two players who were selected to compete in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) East-West Senior All-Star Game and five Eagles that were named to the NEILA All-New England Academic Team. Coach Craig also had the opportunity to lead the HU men's lacrosse program to their ninth-straight NAC Semifinal match in 2018. Unfortunately, his last season at the helm of the program was cut-short in 2020 due to COVID-19.
"I am really thankful for Frank and Janine giving me this opportunity, not many people get to coach at their alma mater," reflects Coach Craig. "I also really want to thank all of my players, former and current, you are incredible and have given me a lifetime of treasured memories. I would like to thank my assistant coaches for all of their hard work and lastly all the alumni and coaches who came before me, in particular Ben Landry, Sean Foley, and Tim Murphy for getting me to Husson. I cannot thank all of you enough for the profound impact you have had on my life. I'm excited to see the next chapter for Husson lacrosse."
Coach Craig's passion for lacrosse and sports will be greatly missed at Husson as you could often find him on the sidelines supporting every team during home games. Not only was he a head coach, but he also helped out as a facilities assistant for the athletic department. Mike plans on spending more time with family after living the busy lifestyle of a collegiate coach for the past five years.
