GORHAM, Maine - The Husson University Men's Lacrosse team (0-6, 0-0 NAC) dropped a back-and-forth non-conference battle to the University of Southern Maine (USM) Huskies (1-1, 0-0 LEC), 17-13 on Saturday afternoon.
IN THE ACTION:
Southern Maine jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead behind goals from Colin Kinney and Joe Cullinan, before Darryn Bailey notched his first tally of the match for the Eagles with 9:41 remaining in the first frame. Less than two minutes later, Nick James found the back of the net for his first of back-to-back goals to put the home team up, 3-1. Griffin Madore fed a sharp pass to Gunner McAllister who was able to convert the pass into the tying goal as the Eagles evened the score at three. Husson's Kyle Prior made a pair of saves to keep the score tied, but three unanswered goals from the Huskies lifted them to a 6-3 lead to end the first quarter.
USM opened the scoring in the second quarter as Kinney sent a hard shot to the upper corner of the goal to push the Huskies to a four point edge. The Eagles' McCallister took a hard drive around the crease to fire a shot to the back of the net, cutting Southern Maine's lead to three. Jaden Wells chipped in his first tally of the game with 8:48 remaining in the first half, but Tristan Dundas pulled the Huskies back ahead by three with the man-up score.
The Eagles added back-to-back goals from Roman Dennis and Wells to bring them within one of the home team. Wells notched the second and third scores of his five-goal performance to give the Eagles their first lead of the afternoon, 10-9 with 12:42 to go in the second frame. Southern Maine regained the lead on a man-up score from Joe Cullinan, before the Green and Gold's Ben Huynh scored his first collegiate goal to tie the score once again. The fourth quarter saw the Huskies rattle off four straight goals before Matthew Boynton added a tally for Husson as they trailed 16-13 with 3:43 remaining in the contest. Kinney scored his game-high sixth goal for USM as the Eagles were unable to hold on and fell to the Southern Maine Huskies, 17-13 on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles outshot the Huskies, 51-46, including 28 on cage for the Green and Gold and 30 on target for the home team. Husson held the advantage in faceoff wins, 23-10, and ground balls, 34-27.
Kyle Prior played all 60 minutes for the Eagles, recording a career-high 13 saves on 46 shots in the loss.
Ian Cooke earned the victory in goal for Southern Maine, posting 16 saves on 52 shots.
LEADERS - HUSSON:
Wells led the Eagles offense netting five goals, while classmate McAllister added four tallies on the afternoon.
LEADERS - SOUTHERN MAINE:
Kinney led all scorers on the afternoon with six goals on 11 shots.
James and Steve Gilbert dished out three assists a piece, as Pini added five ground balls.
The Eagles will head to Sparks, Maryland to face Curry College in the New England Lacrosse Classic on Friday, March 13th at 3:30pm.
