DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Husson University men's basketball team (4-6) was defeated by strong defense from Lawrence University of Wisconsin (6-3) in the Daytona Beach Shootout, 83-60, at the Ocean Center on Saturday night.

It was a slow start at the Ocean Center taking over a minute before the first points of the game hit the scoreboard as DJ Bussey scored on a jumper. Within five minutes Husson took off on a 7-3 run thanks to points from four different players to take a 12-6 lead with 15:25 left in the first half. The Vikings doubled up the Eagles in the next five minutes of action as they took a 20-19 lead with 10:14 remaining in the first half and never looked back. The Eagles were able to maintain a one-point difference throughout the remainder of the opening half as both Brett Cunningham and Bussey hit three-pointers, but the Eagles fell behind, 43-38, to the Vikings at the halfway mark.

The Eagles kept a close game with the Vikings for the first part of the second half as their opponent never pulled ahead by double-digits until nine minutes remained. Leading scorer of the evening, Viking Brad Sendell, drained a three to help Lawrence close out the action on a 19-3 run in the final nine minutes to secure the victory.

  • Justin Thompson paced the Eagles with a double-double including 19 points and 11 rebounds. The junior starter had 11 points and seven rebounds in just the first half.

  • The Eagles rejected eight Vikings' shots while Lawrence was only able to block one Eagle shot. J Thomas and Thompson each had two blocks for the Husson.

  • Sendell scored the game-high 31 points on 11-of-23 (47.8%) shooting from the field and 5-of-10 (50%) from downtown.

  • The Vikings shot 11-13 (84.6%) from the free-throw line while the Eagles were 5-12 (41.7%).

  • Bussey and Cunningham each helped the Eagles with 14 points apiece. Cunningham pulled down seven rebounds.

The Eagles will be right back in action at the Ocean Center to close out their trip to The Sunshine State as they face yet another Wisconsin team in the Daytona Beach Shootout tournament when they take on Caroll University on Sunday, December 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
