Men's Basketball Opens Season with Exhibition Action against the University of Maine

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University men's basketball team visited the Cross Insurance Center to open up the 2019 season as they faced the University of Maine in an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears overtook the Eagles, 76-50.

The visiting Eagles opened the scoring after a minute into the game as DJ Bussey netted a jumper off an assist from Justice Kendall. Maine tied the game before Kendall regained the lead for the Eagles with a jumper of his own, putting away four points in a 30-second span to give the Eagles a 6-5 lead and force Maine to call a timeout. Kendall would make another layup and give the Eagles' their biggest lead of the game at three before the Black Bears broke out on a 16-0 run that would leave Husson trailing, 39-17, at the half. The Eagles were led by Kendall producing eight points and four rebounds while Bussey added five points in the effort.

The Black Bears outscored the Eagles in the second half, 37-33, despite Husson shooting 46.2% (6-13) from the three while the Black Bears only hit 25% (3-12). The final three-pointer of the competition hit home at the buzzer by first-year Joe Massaad who entered the game with his first collegiate appearance just minutes before as they Eagles dropped their season opener. 


Andrew Fleming led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds on 77.8% shooting in just 23 minutes of action. Mykhailo Yagodin joined him in double-digits with 10 total points, while Nedeljko Prijovic anchored the defense with four steals and a block. As a team, Maine won the rebound battle 47-34.

Bussey contributed 15 points on 6-14 shooting. Kendall scored ten points while dishing five assists, and collecting four rebounds. Justin Thompson added on six points five boards. 


The Eagles will open their regular season on Saturday, November 9th as they travel to Chestnut Hill tol take on Pine Manor College for 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
