PRESQUE ISLE, Maine –The Husson University men's basketball squad (8-5, 4-0 NAC) captured their fourth North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory of the season as they picked up a pair of wins over the University of Maine at Presque Isle (6-7, 0-4 NAC) this weekend. The Eagles battled to an 81-68 win against the Owls on Saturday afternoon at Wieden Gymnasium.
It took the Eagles a little longer to find their rhythm in the second match against the Owls as they trailed immediately thanks to five consecutive points by UMPI's Te'Von Hines to get the ball rolling. Following a three and a layup by Justin Thompson, Husson finally caught up in the eighth minute of the game to even the score, 14-14. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Owls capitalized first again as they began to push away with a steal followed by a fast break basket by Shyquinn Dix. UMPI maintained the lead over the next three minutes until a jumper by Justice Kendall sparked a 12-4 run which put Husson on top for the first time that afternoon as they distanced themselves by seven points, 29-22, with five minutes left to play in the half. Barely clinging onto the lead as the two teams left the court for halftime, Husson's Justin Martin drained a pair of 3-pointers to settle the score at 38-35, to add on to his tally of 16 points on the half.
The two teams swapped the lead several times over the opening eight minutes of the second half before the Eagles found their sweet spot on the court and shot 4-4 from the paint to bring the score to 58-52 as they triggered a 22-8 run. With a little over five minutes remaining, Husson had created a score gap of 16 points looming over UMPI. Thanks to an impressive combined second half effort by Kendall with 16 points and Thompson with 11, the Eagles captured yet another conference victory on the road.
Three Eagles – Kendall, Martin, and Thompson – all contributed 18 points apiece towards the win. Thompson (nine rebounds) and Martin (eight rebounds) helped out significantly on their defensive end under the hoop with Martin also picking up four blocks.
Three starters led their team on the scoreboard for UMPI. Dix was the only player of the entire game to break 20 points along with his four assists and seven boards. Hines chipped in nine boards and 13 points while Luke Peterson shot 4-7 from the 3-point arc to add on to 18 total points and three steals.
The Eagles will kick off two weeks of games on their home court with a conference matchup against Maine Maritime Academy next Friday, January 11th at 5:30 p.m.
