BANGOR, Maine - Husson's Brett Cunningham led the Eagles (6-1) to a close 80-78 victory as they battled back from behind to overtake Bates College (2-5) in non-conference play at Newman Gymnasium, ending a seven game losing streak with the first win over Bates since 2012.
The game started out in a back-and-forth battle with six lead changes in the first five minutes of the half. A steal by Dylan Angel followed by a layup cut the Bobcats lead to four with nine minutes left on the clock. Bates turned up the pressure on offense and increased the lead as Nick Lynch made a layup to put Bates up by 13 with four minutes remaining in the half. Husson fought back and cut down the deficit to three points with DJ Bussey draining an open 3-pointer. However, a last second three by Bobcat Nick Gilpin gave Bates a 48-41 advantage going into the second half of the game.
Bates maintained a comfortable separation between themselves and Husson on the scoreboard in the opening ten minutes of the second frame. Cunningham had other plans, sinking yet another 3-pointer followed by a steal and plenty of time to dunk for Kyanti Blyden to cut the Bobcat's lead to just three points. Husson continued on this momentum to make a comeback, breaking out on a 17-7 run over the course of seven minutes while holding the Bobcats scoreless for three entire minutes as the Eagles were on fire to redeem their first lead in the second half, 70-69, off a Justice Kendall jump. Kendall continued to grow the lead by scoring eight-straight points for Husson for a 76-71 score with 2:30 remaining on the clock.
Cunningham knocked down a dagger of a jump shot in the last minute of the game to add to his already impressive night, scoring the final basket of the night as Husson held onto the slim lead by a bucket to finish out the game with a final score of 80-78.
Brett Cunningham had a night to remember posting 24 points and six rebounds to lead all scorers while also scoring the most by a freshman in a game so far this season.
Justin Martin recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, along with three blocks.
DJ Bussey also displayed an exemplary performance bringing in 16 points.
Jeff Spellman led all Bates scorers with 21 points to go with six rebounds and six assists, shooting 5-8 from the three-point arc.
Nick Gilpin chipped in 15 points and five assists.
Nick Lynch had a ten point, 11 rebound double-double to help out his team.
