BANGOR, Maine - The Husson Eagles secured their first home win of the 2019 season against the Wheaton College (Mass.) Lyons (1-5) as the freshmen class paved the way to a 4-3 victory in a non-conference action on Saturday at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex. The Eagles bumped their record to 2-2 on the season.
The Lyons were able to find the back of the net first with a goal from Karin Dion in the 9th minute, assisted by Hannah Arkin. Momentum would shift to the Eagles later in the first quarter after scoring back-to-back goals barely a minute apart to jump ahead, 2-1. Adelle Foss got on the board first following up on a rebounded shot bouncing around in front of the net. Karen Stemm followed up shortly after with her own goal off a pass from teammate Mallory Fairbanks.
Both teams added another point to the scoreboard in the second quarter to make it 3-2 entering into the third. Finding the net first in the second frame was Husson's Ryley Newcomb just 20 minutes into the match as she nudged a shot by Allysah Greene into the back corner. Responding for the Lyons just three minutes later was Wheaton's Hannah Arkin.
Nearly halfway through the third quarter, Husson's Greene fired an unassisted goal into the net for her first collegiate goal, after finding a loose ball bouncing around in front of the net in the 38th minute, pushing the Eagles lead to 4-2.
The Lyons scored late in the game when Karin Dion finished off a rebound left rolling around to bring the game within one goal. The Eagles stood strong in the final minutes to finish out the 4-3 win.
Morgan Karnes finished the game with nine saves in the loss for Wheaton, while Kimmie Goddard covered the net for the Eagles making three stops in the close win.
The Eagles will take the week off before hosting the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday, September 21st at 6 p.m.
