Field Hockey Stumbles Against Wellesley in Season Opener

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Wellesley College (1-0) defeated Husson University (0-1), 3-0, in the season opener for both programs on Friday night at Butler Stadium. 


Hannah Maisano opened the scoring off of a penalty corner assisted by Mitzi Wiggin and Danielle Brubaker at 13:10 in the first quarter. 

The Eagles had one big change in the opening frame off the stick of rookie Victoria Friend, but Wellesley's keeper Janelle Sullivan made the stop in time to secure her shutout. 

Caitlin Campbell gave the Blue a 2-0 advantage at 19:18 in the second quarter as she snuck a shot by freshman goalkeeper Kimmie Goddard. Maggie King rounded out the scoring for Wellesley off a Maisano assist at 23:40 in the second quarter to help the Blue cruise to a 3-0 victory.


In her first collegiate start, Kimmie Goddard recorded 11 saves in 57 minutes between the posts for the Eagles while Wellesley's Sullivan turned away one shot.


  • Victoria Friend led the Eagles offense with three shots, two of which were on goal.


  • Masiano, King and Campbell scored one goal a piece.

  • Masiano tallied a game high five shots, three of which were on goal.

  • Carson Dennis recorded a defensive save to keep the Eagles scoreless.


Wellesley outshot Husson 20-3 while holding a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners. 


The Eagles return to the field for their home opener on Thursday, September 5th as they take on the Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Monks at 7pm at the Winkin Complex.
