BANGOR, Maine – In their first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup of the season, the Husson University field hockey team soared past the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers, 4-1, thanks to a hat trick by freshman Haley Ward on Saturday afternoon at Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
Arika Brochu opened up scoring in the 20th minute giving Husson the advantage for the first time in a match this season. Kelly Griffin grabbed the assist. Less than 90 seconds later, UMaine-Farmington retaliated with a goal by Kyla Sturtevant off the stick of Torrie Nightingale to tie the score at 1-1.
Closing out the first half with a flurry of shots, Ward not only earned her first points of the afternoon, but she also registered her first points as an Eagle. Knocking in a pair just 41 seconds apart from each other, Ward gave Husson a 3-1 lead advancing into the second half of the game, with assists granted to Sadie Royer and Karen Stemm.
With less than four minutes left to play, Ward crashed the net to capture the first hat trick of the season for the Eagles while securing a 4-1 conference victory for Husson.
