Baseball Falls to Baruch in Game 3 of 2019 NAC Championship, 7-3

BANGOR, Maine - The Baruch College Bearcats (17-18) defeated the Husson University Eagles (27-16), 7-3, to capture the 2019 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Baseball Championship in Game Three of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon on The Harold Alfond Diamond at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Baruch notched the game's first three runs in the top of the second off five hits. Conor McCabe led off the inning with a triple to right center and came home on a Kernal Deljanin single to center field. Deljanin then stole second and third and scored on a Jacob Auerbach RBI double to left field. With one out, JP Ramirez ripped a single to center field sending home Auerbach for a 3-0 lead. After Nicholas Valeriano hit a two-out single to center field, Coach Jason Harvey went to his bullpen and brought in Dustin Smith. Smith got the Eagles out of a two-on and two-out jam by getting Liam O'Gara to fly out to center field.

The Eagles plated one run off two hits in the bottom of the fifth. Nolan Brown begin the inning with a triple down the left field line and cross the plate with Husson's first run of the game on a RBI ground out by Nick Guerrette.

The Bearcats extended their lead to 5-1 off a two-out two-run double to left center by Emmanuel Taveras in the top of the sixth before adding two more runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Jorge Mercado and Deljanin.

Husson added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on Conor Maguire's ninth triple of the season, tying him with Coach Harvey for the most in a single-season and an RBI ground out by Kobe Rogerson. Matthew Lawlor got David LeBlanc to ground out for the game's final out to secure the 7-3 victory for Baruch.

ON THE MOUND:

Ryan Allender (4-4) started the game for Husson and took the loss after tossing 1.2 innings. He allowed three earned runs off five hits. Smith pitched one third of inning, allowing no hits and runs. Cam Graham pitched 3.2 innings in relief, yielding two hits, two earned runs and three walks with two strikeouts. Jacob Gauvin allowed one hit in one third of inning. Nolan Dousa pitched one inning, allowing two earned runs off three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Ryan Warner (4-1) threw five innings to earn the win for the Bearcats, yielding four hits, one earned run and two walks with two punch outs. Lawlor tossed the final two innings for Baruch, allowing one hit and two earned runs with a strikeout.

OFF THE BAT – HUSSON:

  • Maguire went 3-4 with a triple, a double, a run scored and an RBI.
  • Rogerson had a 1-3 day to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, while adding an RBI and a walk. He also broke the program's NCAA era single-season record for most hits by a freshman when he recorded his 51st hit, a single to right center in the bottom of the third.
  • Brown was 1-2 with two runs and a triple. 

OFF THE BAT – BARUCH:

  • Deljanin had a 2-4 day with one run scored, two RBI and two stolen bases.
  • Ramirez went a perfect 2-2 on the day with a double and an RBI.
  • Taveras was 1-3 with two RBI and a double.

This concludes the 2019 season for the Husson University Eagles baseball team, while Baruch College's baseball team will represent the NAC/CUNYAC in the 2019 NCAA DIII Championship Tournament.
