Baseball Splits Sunday Morning Doubleheader with Northern Vermont-Lyndon, 5-8, 4-2

BANGOR, Maine - Husson University Baseball Team (15-11, 5-3 NAC) split another North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader with the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon Hornets (7-15, 2-2 NAC), 5-8, 4-2, at the Harold Alfond Diamond at the Dr. John P. Winkin Sports Complex on Sunday Morning.

GAME ONE – Northern Vermont-Lyndon 8, Husson 5

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Ben Rollins opened the scoring on a fielding error. Caleb Laroche singled to right field and Jason Doris scored on an error. Laroche scored later in the inning on a single by Ryder Thornton.

The Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning as David LeBlanc flew out to right field and Conor Maguire beat out the tag at home and scored on the play to make it, 3-1 NVU-Lyndon.

NVU-Lyndon extended their lead in the next frame as they added five more runs. Codi Smith started off the damage with a triple to right centerfield to bring in two runs. Zak Johnson continued the scoring as he grounded out to the second base and brought home Smith. Chris April drove in two runs to finish off the scoring as he singled up the middle.

The Eagles attempted a comeback with their final three outs of the game as Kobe Rogerson doubled to left field to score Nolan Brown and bring Maguire to third base. LeBlanc delivered a single up the middle to score Rogerson and Maguire to make it 8-4, NVU-Lyndon. Ethan Stoddard drove home the final run of the game as he singled to left centerfield to score LeBlanc.

ON THE MOUND:

Husson starter Cam Graham (2-3) allowed eight runs (one earned) on five hits while adding two strikeouts over 1.2 innings of work. Dustin Smith and Jack Corey combined to throw 5.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and punching out six batters.

Tyler Davis (1-3) threw a six innings for Lyndon to pick up his first win of the season. Davis allowed one run while striking out five and walking five. Cameron Flinn tossed 0.2 innings, yielding four runs off four hits with a strikeout. Matt Tritto recorded the games final out with a punch out.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Maguire was 2-4 with two runs scored and a double.
  • Leblanc finished 1-3 with three RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.
  • Rogerson went 1-2 with an RBI, a walk and a double.

OFF THE BAT - LYNDON:

  • Thornton hit 2-3 with an RBI and a walk.
  • C. Smith went 1-4 with a run scored, two RBI and a triple.
  • April was 1-4 with two RBI.

GAME TWO – Husson 4, Northern Vermont-Lyndon 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Just like in the first game, the Hornets took the lead in the first inning as Johnson doubled to left field to score C. Smith. The Eagles tied the game at one in the bottom half of the inning as Luke Covey singled to score Maguire.

Husson took their first lead in the bottom of the second inning when Brown singled to right center field to score Alex Chapman. The Eagles added another run in the bottom half of the fourth with a Brown groundout to the pitcher as Stoddard scored on the play to make it 3-1, Husson.

LeBlanc drove in the Eagles' fourth run of the game with a single to right field scoring Rogerson, then NVU-Lyndon responded scoring in the top of the sixth inning as Jason Doris singled to left field and drove in Johnson to make it 4-2 as Husson captured the victory.

ON THE MOUND:

Matt Page (0-2) started the game for the Hornets. He went 4.0 innings and allowed three runs, while striking out one. John Boulay finished the game for Lyndon. The reliever allowed one run off two hits and struck out one over 2.0 innings.

Brandon Brunell (2-0) pitched the first 5.1 innings for the Eagles, yielding two runs off six hits with four punchouts to pick up his second career victory. Jacob Gauvin pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits to earn the save.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Brown went 1-2 with two RBI and a walk.
  • Rogerson was 2-3 with a run scored and a walk.
  • Stoddard hit 2-3 with a run scored and a double.

OFF THE BAT - LYNDON:

  • Johnson was 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
  • Doris went 1-3 with an RBI.

The Eagles return to the diamond on Wednesday when they travel to Waterville to face Thomas College in a conference doubleheader. Game one's first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
