Baseball Extends Winning Streak to Four with Pair of Victories over Knox, 11-0, 15-1

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Husson University (5-4) swept a doubleheader with Knox College (0-4) in RussMatt Central Florida Invitational action on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles opened with an 11-0 triumph and completed the sweep with a 15-1 victory.

GAME 1: HUSSON 11, KNOX 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Husson got off to an early start, scoring right away in the top of the first inning off a SAC-fly by David LeBlanc, to secure a 1-0 lead.

The bulk of the offense came in the third inning, where Husson scored five runs. After a wild pitch scored Conor Maguire, and another SAC-Fly by LeBlanc scoring Nick Guerrette, the Eagles found themselves with a 3-0 lead. Ethan Stoddard then had a RBI single, scoring Luke Covey, followed by a two-run RBI single by Alex Chapman, plating both Stoddard and Michael Schneider, to give Husson a 6-0 lead.

The Eagles' offense kept at it, adding two runs in the fourth inning, another run in the fifth inning, and two more in the sixth inning, to secure an 11-0 lead. Husson wouldn't look back, and go on for a double-digit, shutout win over Knox.

ON THE MOUND:

Cam Graham had an impressive outing on the mound, throwing six shutout innings to earn the victory, allowing three hits and punching out ten batters. Kyle Bourget and Dustin Smith pitched a scorless seventh inning.

Logan Thake took the loss for the Prairie Fire after tossing four innings, allowing 11 hits, eight runs (four earned) with two strikeouts.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Maguire went 4-5 with three runs scored, a RBI, a double and a stolen base.
  • LeBlance was 2-3 with three RBI and a double.
  • Chapman went 3-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBI.

OFF THE BAT - KNOX:

  • Dalton James went 2-3 at the plate with a solen base
  • Brendan Powers was 1-3 at the plate.

GAME 2: HUSSON 15, KNOX 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Husson picked up right where they left off in the earlier game, scoring an early, first-inning run. This time on a safety squeeze by Guerrette, scoring Maguire, who reached base on a leadoff triple, giving Husson an early 1-0 lead. Next inning was more of the same, as Stoddard singled, stole second base, and scored on a Knox fielding error, to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The fourth inning is where the Eagles really made their mark, scoring a whopping 12 runs. Husson had five walks and one hit-by-pitch, all with the bases loaded, combining for six of their 13 total runs scored in the inning. Other runs were scored on RBI hits from Nolan Brown, Kobe Rogerson, LeBlanc and Luke Covey, as well as on a SAC-Fly by Covey and held on for a 15-1 win.

ON THE MOUND:

Ben Bernier pitched five innings, allowing only one on three hits, all while striking out seven in a winning effort on the mound for the Eagles. AJ Purcell and Nolan Dousa each pitched one inning in relief.

Andrew Ponce went three innings, yeilding two runs (one earned) off three hits in a losing effort.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Brown went 1-1 with three RBI, a double and a pair of walks and runs scored.
  • Covey was 1-3 with two RBI.
  • Maguire went 1-2 with three runs, a triple, a RBI and a pair of walks.

OFF THE BAT - KNOX:

  • Powers went 2-2 with a double.
  • Ben Bartholomew knocked in the lone run for Knox with a RBI single in the seventh.

UP NEXT!

The Eagles finish up their Florida trip tomorrow, Friday, March 15, with another doubleheader. The first game will be against Westfield State at 9:00 a.m., and the second coming against Worcester State at 12:45 p.m.
