Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Olivet, 5-2, 5-3

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Husson University baseball team (3-4) managed to take both games in a non-conference doubleheader against Olivet College (1-6). Game one ended with a 5-2 victory for the Eagles, and game two ended in similar fashion as Husson swept the doubleheader with a 5-3 win in game two at Osceola Heritage Park #5.

GAME 2: HUSSON 5, OLIVET 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After the Eagles scored a run in the top half of the first inning off a RBI single by Luke Covey, the Comets evened the score with a run in the bottom half of the second, when Matt Hewitt singled home Riley Bennett. Husson immediately answered with three runs in its half of the third inning, thanks to two RBI fielder's choices by Ethan Stoddard and Nolan Brown and a RBI groundout by Kobe Rogerson. The Eagles added another run in the sixth inning to make the score 5-1, when David LeBlanc hit a RBI double. Olivet got one back in the home half of the sixth inning due to an Eagle error. In the seventh inning, the Comets brought the tying run to the plate but a diving catch by Brown ended the game.

ON THE MOUND:

Alex Brooks was credited with the win after giving up two runs (one earned) on eight hits in six and two-third innings. Nolan Dousa got the final out to pick-up the save.

Zac Walter made the start for the Comets and lasted three and one-third innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits. Brendan Redding finished the game in relief and allowed one run on four hits.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • David Leblanc went 3-4 with one RBI and two doubles.
  • Maguire went 2-4 with two runs scored.

OFF THE BAT - OLIVET:

  • Bennett went 2-4 with two runs scored.
  • Dyre Leonard and Brandan Settles both tallied of two hits on the day.

GAME 2: HUSSON 5, OLIVET 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Comets pushed across one run in the third inning on a RBI single by Leonard and one run in the fifth inning off a RBI single by Ben Compton to go up 2-0. Husson took the lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning, behind RBI singles by Rogerson, Magurie, Nick Guerrette, Covey and a sacifice fly by Ethan Shepard. Olivet closed the gap to 5-3 with a run in the seventh inning.

ON THE MOUND:

Blake Slicer was credited with the pitching win after allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits over the first six innings. Jacob Gauvin earned the save after pitching the seventh inning.

Hunter Henson took the loss on the mound for the Comets, as he yielded four runs (three earned) on six hits over the first four innings. Zach Ostrowski and Matt Rehfeldt both tossed an inning of relief.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Maguire went 2-4 for the Eagles with a RBI and a run.
  • Guerrette also went 2-4 in the nightcap with an RBI and a run.
  • Alex Chapman went 2-3 at the plate for Husson.

OFF THE BAT - OLIVET:

  • Compton went 2-4 on the day
  • Logan Sella went 1-2 with a double and scored a run

Husson returns to action on March 14th with a doubleheader against Knox College in Kissimmee, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
