Baseball Swept by Central (Iowa), 3-0, 5-3

LEESBURG, Fla. - The Husson baseball team dropped both games on Monday to Central College (Iowa), 3-0, 5-3 in a non-conference doubleheader at Pat Thomas Field.

GAME 1:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

It was a struggle to push runs across the entire day for the Eagles. What looked like a promising chance in the third inning, after a leadoff double by David LeBlanc, was stiffened by a quick, inning-ending double play. Neither team managed a to score until the fourth inning, where Central's Garrett Saunders scored on an RBI single by Jon Roozeboom.

Central came back in their half of the fifth inning and added on two more runs, stretching their lead to 3-0, which ended up being the final score.

ON THE MOUND:

Ryan Allender pitched six strong innings for Husson, allowing seven hits and three runs (one earned), while striking out seven batters in the process. Jacob Gauvin tossed one perfect inning in relief.

Central's starting pitcher Nick Long (1-0) throw 5.1 innings of shutout ball and struck out four Eagles. Ben Wallace allowed a hit in 0.2 innings of work, while Ryan Riddle picked up the save after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • LeBlanc went 3-for-4 in the game, with two singles and a double.
  • Conor Maguire also had two hits in the losing effort for the Eagles.

OFF THE BAT - CENTRAL:

  • Roozeboom went 1-for-3 in the game, and had an RBI single in the fourth inning to put Central on the board.
  • Ryan Bouwman also had an RBI hit for Central, this time in the fifth inning, which pushed the Central lead up to 3-0.

GAME 2: Central 5, Husson 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Central slowly built their lead throughout the first five innings of the game, scoring two in the first, one in the second, one in the fourth, and one on the fifth, after a homerun by Saunders. After five innings, Central held a commanding 5-0 lead.

However, the Eagles would not quit. A sixth-inning rally came to life following a two-run RBI double by Luke Covey, scoring both Ethan Stoddard and David LeBlanc. Covey then came around to score on an RBI single by Ethan Shepard, cutting Central's lead down to 5-3. Riddle closed the door on the Eagles in seventh to give Central the victory.

ON THE MOUND:

Matt P. Smith allowed nine hits and five runs (four earned) in 4.0 innings with one punch-out for the Eagles, while Ben Bernier and Nolan Dousa combined to pitch two scoreless innings of relief.

Rece Martin earned the victory for Central after tossing five scoreless innings, allowing one hit with seven strikeouts.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Covey led the Eagles offensively, with two hits and two RBI. Covey also reached base on a walk.
  • Shepard went 1-for-3 at the plate, driving in the only other Eagle run in the sixth inning.
  • Stoddard scored a run for Husson, after reaching base on a walk.

OFF THE BAT - CENTRAL:

  • Saunders turned in an impressive performace, going 3-for-3 at the plate, including a double, a homerun, and three RBI.
  • Coy Moore had two hits for Central, while also providing an RBI and a run scored.
  • Ryan Bouwman added the last RBI for Central, going 1-for-3 in game two of the doubleheader..

The Eagles are back at it again on Tuesday, March 12TH with another doubleheader. This time, Husson will play two games against Olivet College in Kissimee, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
